Chile’s Policy Snapshot
Chile’s rules focus heavily on emissions and safety compliance, making private imports more restrictive than commercial ones. The general importation of used passenger and cargo vehicles is prohibited, with specific exceptions primarily for returning citizens or imports into free zones. Most buyers route imports through commercial dealers who manage compliance (homologation) and taxes.
MAX AGE LIMIT
Used car imports are generally restricted, but within the Iquique Free Zone (ZOFRI), vehicles can be no more than 8 years old for general import (for re-export). Returning Chilean citizens can import one used vehicle, but full duties and taxes apply.
DRIVE SIDE & DELIVERY
Only left-hand drive vehicles are allowed for general registration in Chile. Right-hand drive vehicles are prohibited.
PROHIBITED IMPORTS
The general import of used passenger vehicles is prohibited with few exceptions (e.g., returning citizens, ZOFRI). Used tires and used motorcycles are also strictly prohibited
What is ZOFRI?
The Zona Franca de Iquique (ZOFRI) is a unique free-trade zone in northern Chile where vehicles can be imported WITHOUT paying Chilean import duties, as long as they remain within the zone. This creates special opportunities for both Chilean buyers and international traders.
Two Key Pathways Through ZOFRI:
1. For Chilean Buyers:
- Purchase vehicles inside ZOFRI and complete nationalization with reduced local tax burdens
- Ideal for residents of northern Chile
- Must comply with all standard Chilean import rules (age limits, LHD-only)
2. For International Re-export (Bolivia/Paraguay):

While not explicitly a “duty advantage” on standard tariffs, the market for EVs is expanding rapidly. Import taxes depend on engine capacity and value.
Standard Petrol/Gasoline Vehicle Duty Rates (CHILE LOCAL)
- General Tariff Rate: A flat 6% ad valorem duty is applied on the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value for most imports.
- Luxury Surcharge: An additional 85% luxury tax is applied to vehicles with an engine capacity over 1,500 cm³ and a CIF value exceeding a set threshold (approx. USD 16,818 as of 2025).
