Unlike many other African nations, Mozambique does not have a strict age limit for importing used vehicles. You can import cars of any age. However, please be aware that vehicles older than 10 years are subject to an “Old Car Surcharge” (increased tax), making newer models more cost-effective in the long run.

Mandatory Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)

Securing Your MOZ Number in Japan

In Mozambique, every used vehicle must be inspected before it leaves the port in Japan. This is a government-mandated safety and quality check

  • The Provider: Intertek is the sole authorized body for these inspections.
  • The MOZ Number: Before shipping, we apply for a “MOZ Number” on your behalf. This is a 6-digit unique tracking code that links your car to the Mozambique Customs system.
  • What is Checked: Intertek inspectors verify the chassis number, engine condition, mileage (odometer), and roadworthiness.
  • Avoid the Fine: If a car arrives in Maputo or Beira without this inspection, you will be fined 10% of the total CIF value of the car, plus the cost of a “Destination Inspection.”

Port Clearance & The “Despachante”

Final Steps at Maputo, Beira, or Nacala

Once the vessel docks, the local clearance process begins. In Mozambique, you are legally required to use a licensed Customs Broker (Despachante) to process the paperwork.

Required Documents: You (or your broker) will need:

  • Original Bill of Lading (B/L): The “Title” to the cargo.
  • Commercial Invoice: Showing the FOB/CIF price.
  • Export Certificate: The Japanese deregistration paper.
  • Intertek DUC: The “Documento Único Certificado” issued after the Japan inspection.
  • The Process: Your Despachante will enter the details into the JUE (Janela Única Eletrónica)—Mozambique’s electronic single window—to calculate your final Meticais-denominated tax bill.
  • NUIT Requirement: Ensure you have your NUIT (Tax Identification Number) ready; without it, the car cannot be registered in your name.
