The LHD Shift: Navigating the Myanmar Market

Why Compliance is Key for Myanmar Imports?

Myanmar’s automotive landscape has undergone a massive transformation. To align with right-hand traffic flow, the government now strictly enforces LHD-only imports. While Japanese RHD cars were once common, the market has shifted toward Japanese-brand LHD models (often sourced from LHD markets) and a rapidly growing Electric Vehicle sector. Understanding the specific “Year of Manufacture” requirements is vital, as arriving with an “over-aged” vehicle can lead to immediate seizure at the port.

Duty & Tax Framework:

Myanmar has significantly reduced tariffs on CBU (Completely Built-Up) units for 2026.

Electric Vehicles (BEV)0%ExemptReduced
Passenger Cars (<2000cc)0%5% – 25%Based on Engine CC

Nexuss Pro-Tips for 2026

  1. Check the “Year” Twice: For 2026, ensure your passenger car was manufactured in 2025 or 2026. Customs is unforgiving on “Year of Manufacture” discrepancies.
  2. EV Advantage: Take advantage of the 2026 pilot project—EVs currently enjoy the lowest total “landed cost” due to tax exemptions.
  3. Broker Network: Use a broker familiar with the Myanmar Tradenet 2.0 system to avoid license cancellation.
