UAE Ports: The Re-Export Engine
The UAE—specifically Dubai—is the “middleman of the world.” Its ports do not just serve local buyers; they act as a massive staging ground for vehicles moving from East to West.
- Jebel Ali Port (DP World): The primary hub. In 2025/2026, expansion at Terminal 4 has increased vehicle handling capacity by 21%. It offers dedicated Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) berths that can handle thousands of vehicles daily.
- Free Zone Advantage (JAFZA): Cars can be imported into the Jebel Ali Free Zone without paying local 5% customs duties. They are stored in “bonded” yards and then re-exported to markets like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Africa (Nigeria/Kenya), and Central Asia.
- The “Dubai Auto Zone” (DAZ): An entire economic zone dedicated to the automotive industry, simplifying the paperwork for buyers who want to buy a Japan-spec car in Dubai and immediately ship it to another country.
Logistics & Regulatory Checklist (2026)
- Age Limit: Most standard used cars must be less than 10 years old for UAE registration. For re-export, older cars are allowed but must stay within free zones.
- LHD Requirement: Only Left-Hand Drive vehicles can be registered for UAE road use. RHD cars can only enter for re-export or as classic cars (30+ years old).
- Calculated Costs: * Customs Duty: 5% of CIF Value ($Cost + Insurance + Freight$).
- VAT: 5% (Calculated on the duty-inclusive value).
